Battery Care Guide

Your lithium-ion battery is the most valuable component of your e-bike or e-scooter. Proper charging, storage and maintenance will maximise performance, extend battery life and significantly reduce the risk of damage or fire.

Please read and follow the recommendations below.

General Safety

Lithium-ion batteries are safe when used, charged and maintained correctly. However, improper use, physical damage or unauthorised modifications can create a fire risk.

Always:

• Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
• Use the battery only with the product it was designed for.
• Keep batteries away from children.
• Store batteries in a cool, dry and well-ventilated location.
• Stop using the battery immediately if you notice any signs of damage or abnormal operation.

Using Approved Chargers

Always use the charger supplied with your e-bike or an approved replacement recommended by the manufacturer.

Using incompatible or modified chargers may:

• Damage the battery.
• Reduce battery lifespan.
• Cause overheating.
• Increase the risk of fire.
• Void your warranty.

Never modify chargers or charging cables.

Safe Charging

For the safest charging experience:

• Charge indoors in a dry, well-ventilated area.
• Place the battery and charger on a hard, non-combustible surface.
• Keep the charging area free from combustible materials.
• Keep charging areas away from exits or escape routes.
• Ensure adequate ventilation around the charger.

Do not:

• Charge on beds, lounges, carpets or other soft furnishings.
• Cover the charger while charging.
• Charge near curtains, paper, cardboard or fuels.
• Charge a wet battery.
• Charge a damaged battery.

Whenever practical, remain nearby while the battery is charging. Disconnect the charger once charging is complete.

Charging Temperatures

For optimum performance:

• Recommended charging temperature: 10°C–30°C
• Avoid charging below 0°C
• Avoid charging above 35°C

If the battery has just been ridden or exposed to hot weather, allow it to return to room temperature before charging.

Daily Battery Use

Lithium-ion batteries perform best when they are used regularly.

To maximise battery life:

• Recharge before the battery becomes completely flat.
• Avoid repeatedly running the battery to 0%.
• For everyday use, maintaining the battery between approximately 30% and 80% charge can help maximise long-term battery lifespan.
• It is acceptable to fully charge the battery when maximum riding range is required.

Battery Storage

If the battery will not be used for an extended period:

• Store with approximately 50–60% charge.
• Store indoors in a cool, dry location.
• Keep away from direct sunlight.
• Avoid temperatures below 0°C or above 35°C.
• Keep away from heaters, fireplaces and other heat sources.

For long-term storage:

• Check the battery charge at least once every month.
• Recharge if the battery falls below approximately 30%.
• Never allow the battery to remain fully discharged for extended periods.

Batteries left completely flat for prolonged periods may suffer permanent damage and may not recover.

Coastal & Humid Environments

If you live near the coast or in a humid environment:

• Store the battery indoors whenever possible.
• Keep charging terminals clean and dry.
• Inspect battery contacts regularly for signs of corrosion.
• Avoid exposing the battery to salt spray or salt water.
• Wipe the battery dry after riding in wet conditions.

Corrosion caused by environmental exposure is not considered a manufacturing defect.

Water Exposure

Although many batteries are weather resistant, they are not waterproof.

Do not:

• Submerge the battery in water.
• Pressure wash the battery.
• Direct high-pressure water at battery seals or connectors.

If the battery becomes wet:

• Dry it thoroughly.
• Allow it to air dry completely before charging.
• If water has entered the battery housing, discontinue use and contact Pedl.

Battery Damage

Do not continue using a battery if it shows signs of:

• Swelling.
• Cracks.
• Dents.
• Burn marks.
• Fluid leakage.
• Excessive heat.
• Smoke.
• Burning smell.
• Unusual noises.

If any of these occur:

• Stop using the battery immediately.
• Move it to a safe outdoor location if it is safe to do so.
• Contact Pedl for further advice.

Modifications

Never:

• Open the battery casing.
• Modify the battery.
• Replace internal battery cells.
• Bypass the Battery Management System (BMS).
• Install aftermarket battery components.

Unauthorised modifications create a serious safety risk and will void the manufacturer's warranty.

Fire Safety

Lithium battery fires are rare but can be extremely dangerous.

If a battery begins:

• Smoking;
• Sparking;
• Venting gases; or
• Catching fire,

call 000 immediately.

Only attempt to move the battery if it is safe to do so.

Do not inhale smoke produced by a lithium battery fire.

Disposal & Recycling

Lithium-ion batteries must never be placed in household rubbish or recycling bins.

When your battery reaches the end of its service life:

• Remove it safely (if designed to be removable).
• Cover exposed terminals.
• Take it to an approved battery recycling facility.

Many battery retailers and local councils provide free battery recycling services.

Battery Life

Battery lifespan varies depending on:

• Number of charge cycles.
• Riding conditions.
• Charging habits.
• Storage conditions.
• Environmental temperatures.
• Overall maintenance.

Reduced battery capacity over time is a normal characteristic of lithium-ion batteries and is not considered a manufacturing defect.

Warranty

The battery warranty covers manufacturing defects only.

The warranty does not cover damage caused by:

• Water ingress.
• Corrosion.
• Physical impact.
• Accidental damage.
• Improper charging.
• Deep discharge due to prolonged storage.
• Unauthorised repairs or modifications.
• Use of non-approved chargers or accessories.
