E-scooter laws in Australia vary by state: some allow private use while others restrict them to official share-scheme trials. Where legal, riders must usually wear a helmet, be at least 16, and keep to speed limits (around 10–20 km/h on footpaths and up to 25 km/h on bike paths or roads). In many states, private e-scooters remain technically illegal on public roads and are only permitted in trial zones or on private property.

What scooter can I ride without a licence?

 If a scooter has an engine capacity of 50cc or more, or can exceed 50 km/h, a motorcycle licence is required across all Australian states and territories. In South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory, scooters with engines under 50cc and a top speed below 50 km/h may be ridden with just a C class (car) licence.
